Cadillac Jack, The Client and Walker on Columbus TV

I put on the Sony tape and it began with a promo for Still Holding On: The Legend of Cadillac Jack. I had to run the title back to catch it. Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black were in a CBS TV movie I didn’t know at all. I guessed it would be terrible, then kept watching the Columbus commercial breaks anyway.

Those breaks go all over the place: a Burger King diamond-ad spoof, an odd Osmocote plant-food spot, Ricart’s ‘No way you can beat the prices,’ and even a news break with Dave Kaylor. After the movie there’s an EyeWitness News at 10 section, but I’m not assigning that news title a station just because the earlier movie was on WBNS. The Client brings a different set of ads, including Star Wars at Taco Bell, kids talking to a space station in an MCI spot, Bill Nye for Discover and Big Bear macaroni and cheese at 33 cents. An Asteroid promo says the movie is coming in two weeks, which makes this stretch look earlier than the Cadillac Jack block rather than part of a single April 1998 broadcast.

Then Walker, Texas Ranger turns up with more ads and Columbus promos, including ‘Wall to Wall Sports on 10TV.’ I joked that if we didn’t watch it, Walker’s ghost would roundhouse-kick us. The movie may have been the surprise at the beginning, but the date changes and those local breaks are what kept pulling me through the tape.
