Daytime Trash Tape – Columbus 1999

Someone in Columbus spent a few months in 1999 recording whatever was on during the day. Soul Train. Springer. Jenny Jones. Sally Jesse. Young and the Restless. And then let the commercials roll. Hills Department Store. A GEICO cart ad. Local Columbus buys from networks that were already fighting for the afternoon slot.

This is VHS-2025-029, taped across ABC6, NBC4, WGN, CBS, and WBNS Columbus between March and June 1999.

Lost Media

Hills Department Store closed in 1999 when Ames acquired it. Those ads are gone. The Columbus local commercial block on this tape is mostly not findable — the local buys from small Columbus advertisers in 1999 never made it online. The Jerry Springer and Jenny Jones episodes are a different story: most 1999 episodes of both shows are unaccounted for. The Lost Media Wiki has active threads on Springer specifically — thousands of episodes, very few confirmed archived. The specific episodes here haven’t been confirmed online.

About This Tape

This is peak daytime TV from a specific moment in Columbus. Soul Train was still running. Springer was at maximum chaos. Jenny Jones was doing her thing. Sally Jesse was still on. And the afternoon soaps anchored the whole block.

The GEICO cart ad is genuinely interesting — early GEICO before the gecko. Local Columbus advertising in 1999 has a very specific texture. Gas stations, car lots, injury lawyers. The Hills ad hurts a little knowing it was one of their last years.
