This WEWS Cleveland recording catches the gap between them: One Life to Live, General Hospital, Oprah, local news, World News Tonight, part of the Atlanta closing ceremony, Wheel, Jeopardy!, and then Family Matters and Boy Meets World.
The Oprah episode is about movie, TV, and commercial sound effects. News Channel 5 has a backyard barbecue, a story about Albert Belle’s home run ball, the Ohio State Fair, and the cast doing the Macarena. The evening news comes back after the Olympics fragment for a Dr. Ted Castele segment called “Women Should Eat More Fat.” There was a lot going on.
The commercial breaks are Cleveland all the way through. Geauga Lake shows up during One Life to Live and again around Oprah. Marc’s is still telling people it is fun to shop there. Nationwide Warehouse goes with “NO BULL.” Arthur Treacher’s, Seaman’s Furniture, Levin Furniture, the Waterfront Line, Ohio Lottery, and a piano extravaganza at Severance Hall all get their turn. Jim Thome rollerblades for Buick during Teen Jeopardy.
Then TGIF arrives with Steve Urkel doing a Mortal Kombat spoof, a Jack trailer, Baked Lay’s, and a stop-motion Milk-Bone dog. The pink Post-it on the sleeve lists the day in a much calmer way: One Life to Live, General Hospital, Oprah, News Channel 5, World News Tonight, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, Family Matters. August 2, 1996.
