Craig’s notes
Marshall Sylver spends the first stretch explaining what hypnosis is, what he calls mind triggers, and how a conscious mind differs from a subconscious one. Then he brings out a participant for a demonstration. I thought I saw him touch her leg and backed up the tape. It was her hand. Still a little creepy, just not what I initially thought happened. He works through relaxation with her, including a suggestion about her hand lifting.
After the demonstration he gets into the rules for writing your own suggestions: put them in the present tense, keep them simple, and focus on one change at a time. Eventually he wants the viewer to write a spoken program and record it on an audio tape. He even explains leaving blank tape at the start and checking the recording level. By that point I was wondering how many rules for sleeping one person needed.
We did get to the end. I celebrated finishing it, then noticed he was still talking as the closing music rose. I liked the tape more than I expected, especially that long goodbye. Chat seemed to enjoy the presentation too. None of that tells us whether self-hypnosis does what he says it will.
