Star Trek TOS VHS 1990s SciFi Channel Syndication Commercials

Someone recorded four Star Trek: The Original Series episodes off the 1990s SciFi Channel syndication run and muted the commercials partway through. Not all of them — just most of them, starting somewhere in the middle of the first session. We have spent four streaming sessions on this tape and still have not finished it. The muting is its own mystery. The tape has been named “the monster muting tape.”

The episodes are Charlie X, Where No Man Has Gone Before, The Naked Time, and The Enemy Within — four consecutive early first-season episodes. The Fuji HQ sleeve contains a TDK tape, which is a very 1990s thing to find. The SciFi Channel syndication run from this era had its own particular commercial ecosystem: SciFi Channel promos, Star Trek merchandise ads, the SciFi Shop selling AT&T calling cards alongside Trek collectibles, a Chase Masterson Star Trek Experience giveaway. Specific to this channel, this era, this audience. That context disappears when you just stream the episodes from Paramount+.

The commercials that did record with audio are solid 90s artifacts: Baked Ruffles throwing direct shade at Pringles, an Oldsmobile roller coaster commercial that chat flagged immediately, H&R Block featuring a guy who was over the top even by H&R Block standards, Chunky Soup football players, a Crocodile Dundee Subaru Forester chase scene, and Teddy Grahams. The recorder also muted a Pontiac roller coaster commercial, a Nestle Crunch animated Dracula ad, and a Gateway cow PC ad — all visible, no audio. Sessions 1-3 streamed February 5, 10, and 18. Session 4 is still pending.
