The Tape

Tape ID: VHS-2025-043. Part of the 2025 intake. Questar Video, Inc. — a Chicago-based company that produced travel documentaries for the PBS home video market through the 1980s and 90s. This tape is from their “Travel the World” series, the Italy episode. Runtime: 120 minutes in SP mode.

What Is On It

Venice and Florence. The Doge’s Palace. Saint Mark’s Basilica. Murano island. The Uffizi. Botticelli. Michelangelo’s David. Host Gladys Rankin narrates. The tape also covered touring Scotland in a companion release — VHS-2025-042 is already in the archive.

Factory-recorded commercial release. Packaged for retail. The kind of thing that ended up in PBS pledge drive catalogs or the travel section of a video rental store.

Archive Status

Not yet screened. Cataloged and shelved. Condition is good. The Questar Travel the World series is a specific slice of 1980s-90s PBS home video culture — earnest travel documentaries sold directly to the PBS viewer demographic. Whether this tape has anything unusual on it remains to be seen when it goes in the player.
