Separate but Equal, Copperfield and Columbus television

The first thing on this tape is Separate but Equal, and I kept waiting for the commercials. They didn’t come. I even wondered whether this was a later movie-channel airing rather than the original ABC presentation. Then the recording jumps to The Magic of David Copperfield XIII, and he promises to make an Orient Express car disappear. The sponsors disappear first: the recording cuts right past them.

During the magic special, a 10TV tornado-watch crawl shows up. I liked having an Ohio weather warning running under a disappearing train, and started trying to pin down whether a watch actually happened around the special’s original April 1991 date. That question is more interesting to me than pretending the whole tape comes from one night. Later, Unsolved Mysteries arrives with WCMH’s Columbus breaks intact: a Sunny 95 birthday giveaway, Black Tie Garage Sale, Patrick Stewart narrating a Pontiac spot and an awful lot more. The contrast with the earlier commercial-free material is pretty satisfying.

When I finished the tape, it jumped again. A Switched at Birth promo led into an NBC news update about Nintendo agreeing to refund customers over price fixing, followed by Ponderosa, a soap ad and a glimpse of Night Court. I liked the theme song and wanted more of the show, but that glimpse was about it. This is a strange assembly to give one date to, and I wouldn’t trade away the breaks that survived just to make it tidier.
