Craig’s notes

Beakman’s World got me with the paper lesson. I liked Bill Nye, but Beakman had the talking rat and was a lot more willing to get weird with it. Then the show went from truffles and escargot to making paper out of cellulose. I was interested enough to start thinking about the paper mill near where I grew up, which smelled terrible. The town, I mean. I never went inside the mill.

The tape was having a harder time than Beakman was. The picture went rough around a McGruff spot; I rewound a little and tried to let the tracking recover. The breaks were worth sticking with: dinosaur toys, a Barbie dough kitchen, Kaybee’s solar gak offer, and Ronald McDonald trying a new hairstyle. Furniture Fair turned up near the end, too.

I also kept trying to date the recording. The handwritten note has a year that doesn’t fit what we were seeing, and the Rolanda promo and a toy offer gave us more clues without settling the day. By the time Beakman finished folding paper, I was still trying to figure out the Saturday. Then the tape ended.

TOZAI Premium Grade T-120 VHS, EP recording
Recording
WCPO 9 Cincinnati / CBS Saturday-morning recording. The catalog transcribes the handwritten note as “5-21-99 re/run”; playback points to a 1994-era ad environment, but the exact date is unresolved. The note is not legible enough in the reviewed photo to settle its numerals.
Viewed
May 26, 2026. Watched through the physical end; playback/tracking was rough, especially around McGruff.
On the label
Printed TOZAI Premium Grade T-120 sleeve and a separate handwritten Beakman’s World note; the note is not in the proposed cropped photo.

On the label

  • TOZAI Premium Grade T-120 sleeve: Printed sleeve text includes 2-4-6 Hour VHS Video Cassette and Professional Recording and Reproduction Quality.
  • Beakman’s World handwritten note: The catalog transcribes the program name on the pink note; the note is omitted from the proposed web photo crop.
  • “5-21-99 re/run” (catalog transcription): The catalog’s transcription conflicts with playback dating clues; the numerals are not confidently readable from the photo. This is not a proven recording date.
