Star Trek 25th Anniversary Marathon, Columbus 1991 Broadcast

September 29, 1991. Fox 28 Columbus ran the Star Trek 25th Anniversary Viewers Choice Marathon followed by the two-hour anniversary special. Someone taped the whole thing. The special itself is available on archive.org now, but that’s not really the point. The point is this is a local Columbus broadcast with every Columbus commercial break intact.

This is VHS-2025-002. Taped off WTTE Fox 28 Columbus. Condition: fair. Star Trek TOS episodes voted on by viewers, then the big anniversary special hosted by Shatner and Nimoy. The Super Nintendo had just launched. That era hangs over every ad break.

Lost Media

The Columbus local ads are gone. Mr. Hero commercials from 1991. The Calif and Handleman law office spot. These were regional buys that never got archived anywhere. The national spots — Long John Silver’s, Tuna Helper, Stanley Steemer — those are findable. The Columbus-specific stuff isn’t.

About This Tape

The anniversary special is worth watching on its own. Gene Roddenberry, DeForest Kelley, Nimoy and Shatner hosting together. September 1991 was a weird moment for Star Trek — Next Generation was running, the original cast was winding down, and the franchise was bigger than it had ever been.

The WTTE station IDs are good. The whole tape feels like a very specific Columbus Sunday in 1991.
