About This Tape

The Oberammergau Passion Play runs every ten years. It’s been going since 1634. The 1990 performance was the first after reunification of Germany. That’s not nothing.

The tape itself is a scenic travel documentary — the kind of thing Blockbuster kept in the travel section, probably rented three times and forgotten. Nella Schönefeld Productions made a small number of these European travel titles in the late 1980s and 1990s. This specific tape turns up zero results anywhere online. No YouTube upload, no archive.org copy, no digitization project.

If you want to see what a 1990 commercial travel documentary of the Alps looked like, with original music licensing and Passion Play footage from that specific year, this appears to be one of the only surviving copies.

The Blockbuster sticker is still on it. (It traveled.)
