Craig’s notes
The first time I put this Cleveland tape on, I wanted to know when and where it had been recorded. Oprah was playing, so I started skipping ahead. Then a commercial offered Pop-Tart Snack Sticks in a resealable pouch. I still don't know when I'd need to reseal a Pop-Tart. A little later, Oprah took us to the Mustard Museum, and suddenly I wanted to watch Oprah. The tape also gave us a few seconds of The Cosby Show, Lou Bega teaching Regis and Kathie Lee the Mambo No. 5, local ads, and News 5 checking in on the Indians.
The Morning Exchange had a workout guest named Daryl demonstrating exercises you could do at home. The host kept finding reasons to touch his abs. We made a clip, put it on our YouTube channel, and sent it to Daryl after the VHS Detectives found him. He said he remembered that day like it was yesterday. The next stretch brought us The View, a Whose Line rerun, Char the psychic, and another Morning Exchange with Michael Symon cooking while the local ad breaks kept going. Then You Asked for It turned up a tattooed woman and a man balancing a car on his head.
When I went back months later to finish the tape, I pulled up three wrong tapes before finding this one. You Asked for It was still going: face-piercing performers, a man with a rubber mouth, and a hypnotized man apparently giving birth. After a break with the Taco Bell dog singing 'Chances Are,' Regis started telling Kathie Lee about Puff Daddy's party. The tape cut to Today with Matt Lauer and then cut back to Regis. I accused Regis of sneaking into my house to tape over his own party story. Apparently he didn't do a thorough job. The View's 'Ling's Money Thing' was at the end.
